Madeline A. Pilla

Madeline ‘ Maddie’ A. Pilla, 89 of Auburn passed away on her birthday , Thursday June 13,2019 at SUNY Upstate Hospital in Syracuse.
She was born in Auburn the daughter of the late John and Carmella (Charles) Pilla and had been a life resident. ‘ Maddie’ as she was affectionately known by her  friends was valedictorian of the Class of  1948 at Central High School. She also excelled in athletics and was a standout baseball player for Auburn.  Maddie retired from New York Telephone Co. as a clerk in the central office in 1984, after more than 35 years of service. She was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and CWA Union 1114. Madeline was a very devout Catholic and longtime communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church and member of their Sacred Heart Society. She was also  very active in the church at various levels. Madeline was one of the most generous and giving woman . She donated to numerous organizations and charities yearly. Madeline also constructed dolls for children that were going into surgeries at various hospitals . She was very active in all of her class reunions and enjoyed planning and coordinating many parties at NY Telephone , over the years. Madeline was an avid Notre Dame and Syracuse football and basketball enthusiast . She also loved the New York Yankees and especially was a big fan of Derek Jeter. She cherished the times spent with her family and friends.  She always put others first and never wanted anything in return. Madeline’s golden heart and warming smile will always be remembered and truly never forgotten by all who were fortunate enough to get to know this special women.
She is survived by her loving sister Theresa Pilla of Auburn, two  first cousins Evelyn Van Buren and Anita Emmi as well as several other cousins and friends.
A calling hour will be held tomorrow, Monday from 9:00 am until 10:00 am in St. Francis of Assisi Church. Madeline’s Mass of Christian burial will immediately follow at 10:00 am in the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Contributions may be made in her memory to either the Golisano  Children’s  Research Hospital or to the Matthew House.
A special thank you to  the staff at SUNY Upstate Hospital , for their extra special care and compassion that was shown to Madeline during her stay.
