Obituary

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Dominic “Big D” Giacona, of Auburn, who departed from us on August 10, 2023, at Upstate Hospital in Syracuse, surrounded by his close family and with his children by his side.
Born into a proud Italian family on November 4, 1955, he is survived by his doting mother, Maria, children Dominic L. (Abby) and Gabriella (Raphael), and four loving siblings: Joseph (Maryanne), Samuel (Lisa), Josene (Mario) Ciotoli, and Joanna (Jeff) Dewitt. Dominic’s close- knit family also includes his aunt and three uncles, 18 first cousins in America and Italy, 12 nieces and nephews, 11 great nieces and nephews, as well as a vast circle of cherished friends.
Dominic was predeceased by his father, best friend, and namesake, Dominic, whose memory he held especially dear.
A hard-working provider to his family, Dominic served New Process Gear in Syracuse, New York, with unwavering commitment for over 30 years. Always “Taking Care of Business,” his entrepreneurial spirit led him to co-establish the Auburn-based limousine service, Big D’s Limos, together with his dear friend, Warren “Lee” Vanderpool. Above all, he cherished his retirement and the time he spent with his beloved children.
Dominic, with his inherent sense of humor, would often recount tales and share jokes that displayed his charismatic nature. He was an eclectic music enthusiast, played the saxophone as well, and was actively involved in the local Knights of Columbus Chapter 207, tending the bar and forging lasting friendships.
A man of outsized character, Dominic’s magnetic presence stemmed from his easygoing personality that captured the trust, attention and affection of all who shared the pleasure of knowing him. He had a particular reverence for Elvis Presley, whose charisma and music he deeply admired. Notably, he treasured a visit to Graceland with his sister, Joanna, in Tennessee, and in a poetic turn, his memorial service will take place on August 16th, 2023 – coinciding with the day of the "King’s" passing.
The family deeply appreciates the overwhelming support from the community during this challenging time. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Dominic’s memory to the Knights of Columbus. Special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of SUNY Upstate Medical University who played such an integral role in Dominic's wellbeing over the past months and years.
Calling hours will be held on August 15th, 2023, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and funeral services on August 16th, 2023 at 10:00 am — both at Sacred Heart Church in Auburn. Attendees are encouraged to share stories and fond memories of their time with Big D. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of all those he touched.
