Hobart Ouderkirk Obituary

Hobart “Hobie” Ouderkirk April 8, 1936-August 7, 2024.

Hobie turned 88 on the day of the eclipse. It seems the Gods saw fit to repay him for the laughs he brought to the world. Born in Syracuse, son of Karl and Nina Pearl Ouderkirk, and raised in Sandy Creek, Hobie was the middle child of three boys, sadly predeceased by both Dickie (1934-1941) and Ivan “Ike” (Sandy) 1949-2022. Hobie was an athlete from an early age, holding the Sandy Creek basketball scoring record from 1953 until broken by the son of his good friend, Fred Peters, nearly 50 years later. He also excelled in football and baseball, the latter he continued in the Air Force where he pitched for March Air Force Base, winning the 1957 California State Championship at the Baseball Congress. An avid bowler and golfer, he golfed at Camillus country club and Highland golf club, where he proved to be a cagey veteran, scoring his first hole-in-one, his first 300 game and an 830 series in the year he retired.  Hobie was the team statistician for the Syracuse Nationals basketball team in the late 50s, with his good friend Barney Cable on the roster. Hobie retired from NPG with 20 years of service and many lifelong friends. Father of three sons Scott Ouderkirk (Tisa), David Ouderkirk (Barbara) And James Ouderkirk, he is also survived by grandchildren Brittney (Kenneth) Hobart (Megan), Meredith, Nicholas, Madeleine, Aubrey and great grandchild Collins Mae. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews and cousins and is predeceased by his former wife, Beverly and Daughter-in-law Mary Alice.

A celebration of Hobie’s life will be held at Highland Golf Club on August 25th from 3-6 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Hobie’s memory to:
