James E. Davis Sr., 85, died on August 18, 2024, at Auburn Community Hospital in the presence of his close relatives.
James Sr. was born on February 10, 1939, in Dublin, Georgia, to the late Anis Davis and Mattie Shermon, his loving parents. He was one of six children, all of whom passed away before him.
James Sr. traveled to King Ferry Camp with his parents and eventually settled in Auburn, New York, where he spent the remainder of his adult life. In the 1970s, he was employed at General Electric, followed by Martin's Potato Farm.
James Sr. married the late Billie Fowler, and two children were born from this union. James Sr. confessed his faith in Christ at a young age, and it remained a significant part of his life. He enjoyed reading his Bible, paying his tithes, and being an active member of the Apostolic Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in Auburn, NY, led by Pastor Willie Murray.
Because of his personality, James Sr. was nicknamed "Jump Monkey" in the local community. He adored walking around town and greeting people with his renowned "Be Bop, Be Bop" phrase. He also enjoyed watching the soap opera show "The Young and the Restless," and you couldn't disturb him during that time. James Sr. also attended numerous community activities, lending his support and encouragement without fail.
James Sr. leaves behind a legacy of love and family, a legacy that will be cherished and remembered by all who knew him. He is survived by his sons, James Davis Jr. (Monique) of Auburn, New York and Demetris Davis of Ft. Myers, Florida. His daughter, Sharon Butler (Wayne) of Dublin, Georgia, who was preceded in his death, also cherishes his memory. He was a proud grandfather to Jamicia and James Davis III, Tiffany Butler, Wyesha Watkins, and India Sherrier. He also leaves behind 12 great-grandchildren. His family extends beyond blood, as he had many friends in the Auburn community, where he served for over 65 years. A special mention to his dear friend, the late Ms. Lillie Mae Marino.
A memorial service will be held this Thursday, August 22nd at 2:00 pm in the Apostolic Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, 103 Fitch Ave., Auburn.
