John Onori Obituary

AUBURN | John A. Onori, 82, of Auburn, passed away peacefully on Father’s Day, June 16, 2019, at The Commons on Saint Anthony, with his loving family at his side.

He was a life resident of Auburn, the son of the late James and Margaret Cutillo Onori. John was a Holy Family High School graduate, receiving his bachelor’s degree from Niagara University and a master’s degree in education from Cortland State University. John was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Prior to his retirement, John had been employed for more than 33 years as a teacher in the science department for the Auburn Enlarged City School District. He was a former chief for the Fleming Volunteer Fire Department and longtime member of Highland Park Golf Course. John was also an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing, traveling, and spending time in the summer at his camp on Owasco Lake. He was an avid New York Yankees and Syracuse Orange sports enthusiast. John was most happy spending time with his family and especially loved attending every one of his grandchildren’s special events.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Ann Ryan Onori, of Auburn; five children: sons, John J. (Constance) Onori, of Chicago, and Edward F. (Tanya) Onori, of Auburn; daughters, Linda Buckley, Susan DeBagio, and Sharon (Steve) Franchina, all of Auburn; nine grandchildren, E.J. (Jacquline) Onori, Megan (Cody) Buckley, Felicia (Derrick) Rocker, Brandon DeBagio (Sherry Seamans), Bob Buckley, Stefanie DeBagio, Trevor Onori, Lindsey Franchina, and Abby Franchina; two great-grandsons, Oliver Rocker and Tucker Dunn; sister, Marian Oropallo, of Auburn; sisters-in-law, Jane (Greg) Van Scoy, and Barb Yarema; brothers-in-law, Martin (Lois Hole) Ryan, and Patrick (Caroll) Ryan; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by two brothers-in-law, Michael Oropallo and Boris Yarema.

Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in Sacred Heart Church. John’s Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Sacred Heart Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.Contributions may be made in John’s memory to The Commons on Saint Anthony, 3 St. Anthony St., Auburn, NY 13021.
