Lyman Howard Wethey

Lyman Wethey of Port Byron, NY passed away on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at Lakeland Regional Hospital in Lakeland, Florida, surrounded by family, after a brief illness.  

He was born on November 8, 1940, the son of the late Howard Wethey and Lois Marshall Wethey.  He grew up in Port Byron and graduated from Port Byron Central Schools in 1959.  On August 24, 1963, he married Carolyn Copp.  They were married for 48 years, until Carolyn’s passing in 2011. They had three sons, David (and Pertrice) Wethey of Victor, George, of Throop, and Dwight (Mary) of Port Byron.  He is also survived by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his sisters, Kathryn Schnur of Wilmington, North Carolina, and Ruth Wethey of Port Byron, as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews.  He owned and operated a residential construction business that he started in 1961, and worked as the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds at the Port Byron Central School System from 1981 to 2001.

He served his community in many ways, including as a volunteer firefighter, Village Trustee and former Mayor for the Village of Port Byron.  He was a member of the Port Byron First United Methodist Church, where he served on many committees, including Trustees, Lay Leader, and the district building committee.

During retirement he continued to always build.  He and Carolyn went on mission trips and enjoyed their time building their cottage in Old Forge NY, and spending winters with their friends and church family in Babson Park, Florida.   He will be remembered for the love he had for his family and friends, his commitment to his faith, and the way he encouraged others.

Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 6, 2026 at the Port Byron First United Methodist Church.  A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 7 at the church.  A second Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2026, 1:00 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Babson Park, Florida.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Port Byron United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, PO Box 344, Port Byron, NY  13140, or the First Christian Church,Building Fund, 1295 N. Scenic Highway / PO Box 855 Babson Park, Fl 33827.
