Virginia Ann Chalanick (Steves), 73, of Auburn, NY, passed away on March 18, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on May 29, 1952, in Rochester, NY, to W. Reginald and Rose Steves. Virginia grew up in Westvale, NY, and attended Bishop Ludden High School. While attending Auburn Community College, she met her husband, Donald Chalanick. They began their life together in Syracuse before settling in Auburn, NY—Donald’s hometown—where they raised their three children.
Early in their marriage, Virginia operated a daycare out of her home, becoming a beloved “neighborhood mom” to many. From there, she worked with the School-Based Dental Sealant Program and traveled to many school districts to help put sealants on teeth for various local students. She then transitioned into an office management role with Women’s Health Care Specialists for many years. She concluded her career as a Teacher’s Aide with the Auburn Enlarged City School District.
Virginia was known for her infectious smile, genuine kindness, and unmistakable laugh—often heard during long phone calls with her closest friends. She was a second mother to many and cherished the relationships she built throughout her life. She enjoyed playing Bunco and Mahjong, golfing, and spending time with friends—especially sharing dinners, drinks, and laughter with the “Manhattan Club.”
She is survived by her loving husband, Donald; her children, Lisa Rosbrook (Jamie), Daniel Chalanick, and Matthew Chalanick (Elizabeth); her grandchildren, Emma Rosbrook, Kaden and Kendall Chalanick, and Jack and Makenna Chalanick; her brother, William Steves (Carol); her sister, Mary Edwards; and her sister-in-law, Teresa Steves.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Thomas Steves, Michael Steves, and Robert Steves; her brother-in-law, Mitchell “Mike” Edwards; and her sister-in-law, Margaret Steves.
Calling hours will be held on April 6, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with a funeral Mass immediately following at Sacred Heart Church, 90 Melrose Rd., Auburn, NY.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Auburn Education Foundation or The Matthew House of Auburn, NY.
